I was walking around the house trying to wrap my head around the idea of the kingdom of God. My vision of that, as shared by many who I have come to know through the internet and only two in real life, is that the kingdom of God is among us right here and now and available if we only decide to live it. The kingdom of God is not the carrot at the end of a stick that a behaviorist ( or parent or priest) would wave in front of our faces to get us to be good. But the kingdom of God is being good in the eye of God and as exemplified by Jesus.
The idea that I have a hard time understanding is why it is so difficult for us to convey this idea to people, today. Yes, I realize that people have their own concerns and distractions in the collective illusion of us all trying to win the game of life for us and our family. But why is it so difficult for our preachers to explain the kingdom of life to everyone?
I feel the need to shout it from the rooftops. I was joking with my wife that I could go to the airport, or perhaps downtown on a street corner and tell people to repent be cause the kingdom of God is at hand, but I somehow don’t believe they would listen. Maybe if I made a sign too….
There has to be a way to communicate this. Jesus did, and we are not listening. There has to be a way.
I don’t know if you all do this, but lately I have found that I get my best perspectives about what I believe by listening to the ramblings of those who I put in the “against” category of our Lord’s message. One example is that I am a believer in spiritual practices and I found this wonderful description of Lectio Divina on a site that exhorts the “dangers” of spirituality beyond their conception. Funny, I read this article and find support for it, not evidence against.
Also, the degree of hatred out there is amazing. I have been in the camp of thinking that the Southern Baptist Convention is pretty far off the beaten path at this point (see this Wikipedia Article) yet the the site Apprising Ministries has this article where they think the SBC is basically too liberal. I know that some would consider me a masochist for reading this stuff, but I consider part of my call in God’s work to understand (or attempt to understand) how others think and feel about Jesus and what he was saying.
I ask God’s blessing on these people and Love that they provide me insight into a society that I have a hard time imaging.
Thanks for your interest in my blog. I hope to benefit my friends and others who read this.
The lost codex of this site is the manuscript that mankind has lost in its journey from the beginning to the end. We have glimpses of that codex all around us. I hope to pull pieces of that manuscript together over time to recreate that which was lost and now is found.
Like all good bloggers out there I spent some time trying to think of a inspired name for my soon to be revolutionary thoughts. But as coincidence would have it, I already owned the domain “Lost Codex” because my 16 year old son thought it sounded cool a couple of years ago. He gave up on it, but now that which was lost is now found, and it is MINE! I call things like that God things. They just happen and we sometimes notice them.
